Dakshina Kannada DC urges vigilance to prevent youth from falling prey to drug addiction

Mangaluru, May 13, 2026: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. has directed officials to take stronger measures to create awareness among children about the dangers of drug abuse, along with providing treatment, as the younger generation is increasingly vulnerable to narcotic addiction.

Speaking after chairing the district-level Narco Coordination Centre committee meeting held at the Town Hall on Tuesday, he said students in schools and colleges are at a higher risk of being attracted to drugs and therefore must be educated about its harmful effects.

Darshan said drug addiction among youth can be prevented through education, awareness programmes, a healthy family environment, strict enforcement of laws, and by promoting healthy lifestyles among youngsters.

He warned that drug addiction at a minor age could severely affect health and push children into depression. Parents and teachers must closely monitor children’s behaviour, failing which the well-being of families could begin to deteriorate. He added that children addicted to drugs may not be able to progress socially and academically, and stressed that parents, schools, colleges, and hostel authorities should carefully observe students.

Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, speaking at the meeting, described drug addiction as a serious menace that destroys an individual’s physical, mental, and social life. He said awareness must be created about the long-term negative impact of narcotic substances on the brain.

He also suggested conducting inspections and counselling sessions in all colleges every month to educate students about the ill effects of drugs. He added that addiction can be overcome with the help of treatment centres and experts.

Superintendent of Police Dr Arun K., Deputy Commissioner of Police Mithun H.N., Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar Bhoomareddy, and officials from various departments were present at the meeting.
