DYFI organizes mega protest demanding homes for the homeless

Mangalore, Oct 24, 2011: The DYFI organized a protest in front of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) today against the civic body’s delay in providing homes to homeless people.

DYFI District President Muneer Katipalla addressed protestors and said that the government is giving land to multinational companies, but not to poor people. Lamenting that none of the government’s schemes have reached beneficiaries, he said that the MCC had announced back in 2003 that houses will be given to 600 beneficiaries, but land has not been provided so far.

 

Stating that a number of protests have been held so far, he said that, instead of land coming to the poor, the farmers’ land is being given to private companies and industrialists. Government land is being sold to rich industrialists for black money at the cost of poor people.

Mr. Katipalla also accused the government of attempting to develop the state at the cost of the people. The poor are unable to pay their rents because of the steep hike in rentals, he added.

Further, he said that the state government had promised 4000 houses to each constituency, but has not kept its promise. The announcement of Ashraya, Vajpayee Housing Projects, Rajiv Gandhi projects, and Indira Awas projects are useless because the government says there is no land, he added.

A number of beneficiaries participated in a massive rally from Besant College to MCC, supported by farmers’ unions and labour unions. A memorandum was later submitted to the commissioner of MCC. The police helped to retain peace and order throughout the protest.

Vasanth Achary, Dayananda Shetty, Sunil Kumar Bajal, Imthiaz, Bharathi Bolar, Yadav Shetty, Sajidha, and many others participated in this protest.
