Mangalore, Feb 24: Delegation of Dakshina Kannada District Youth Congress Committee met K H Muniyappa, Union minister of state for railways at New Delhi on Wednesday and submitted a memorandum on various railway issues and facilities for coastal Karnataka. The delegation insisted on having a separate railway division for this region, headquartered at Mangalore. The delegation urged the minister to declare the same in this forthcoming railway budget.

The memorandum included various demands such as new train services from Karwar to Bangalore, Mangalore to Howrah, and Hubli to Mangalore via Londa. The committee also urged the minister to sanction rapid transit system, a circular train system from Kundapur to Mangalore covering all important towns of Udupi and DK districts. They sought immediate construction of catch siding on the Ghat section between Subramanya and Sakleshpur.

This facility, the committee headed by P V Mohan, convener of Mangalore Railway Development Action Committee, impressed on the minister, would facilitate railway authorities to operate more frequent train service on the Mangalore-Bangalore sector. Catch siding is essential to detain a train at a station on the Ghat section to allow movement of another train on the single broad gauge track connecting this coastal city with state capital.

Railways have sanctioned construction of catch siding at Yedakumeri station. However, the work is yet to be start. Lack of catch siding facility in most of the stations in the Ghat section is reason why the day train from Mangalore to Bangalore can not be run daily. This day train presently is a tri-weekly service. The Commissioner of Railway Safety had imposed restrictions for running passenger trains in the Ghat section, which has 1:50 gradient.

Out of four stations, only two, namely Donigal and Shirivagilu have catch sidings. With the construction of catch siding at Yedakumeri, additional traffic can be introduced.
