Mangalore, August 17, 2012: Two confidence building meetings were held for North East Indian and Tibetan students in the city on August 17, Friday.

St. Aloysius College
St. Aloysius College organized a special confidence-building meeting for the benefit of North East Indian and Tibetan students studying in different colleges all over Mangalore in its AV Room on August 17, Friday.

 

DCP (crime) Dharmaiah, the chief guest of the event, said that rumors of an Assamese student attacked by a mob in Bangalore have led to the exodus of North East Indian students from Bangalore. Clarifying that these are just rumors, he said North East Indians and Tibetan students are safe in the city. Stating that no North East Indian or Tibetan student has left Mangalore, he said that Mangalore is the safest place for these students.

Stating that students need not fear any rumors, he urged North East Indian or Tibetan students who receive threatening calls or text messages to immediately call 100 for help. He also said that they can contact him on 9480802305 or Bunder Sub Inspector Vinay Gaonkar on 9480853308 if they sense danger or trouble. Further, he advised students not to forward any threatening text messages they may receive as it will only create fear in the student community.

Fr. Francis Almeida, Inspector Vinay Gaonkar, Saudathullah, Principal Fr. Swebert D’Silva, and others were also present.

NEST and Sparsha
Meanwhile, the North East Students Team (NEST) under the banner of Sparsha also organized a confidence-building meeting for North East Indian students from various colleges across the city in Sahodaya Hall on August 17, Friday.

ACP Subhashchandra, the chief guest of the event, urged students to remain calm and call the police if they receive threatening calls or messages.

Banri of Manipur, a student of Masood College, said that she has been living in Mangalore for the past 3 years and does not know whether to believe in the rumors or not. She said that North East Indian students have urged the state government to protect them. Students must not add fuel to rumors by forwarding threatening messages, but must immediately inform the police, she said.

Referring to Mangalore as a “home away from home,” Adarsh Sharma of Manipur said that students must be careful even if it is just a rumor. He also stated that he has not received any threatening call or message.

Dennis D’Silva, president of Sparsha, Suresh, P. V. Mohan, Dr. Honey Cabral, J. R. Lobo, and others were also present.
