Mangalore, Nov 24, 2012: Delivering the inaugural address at the inauguration ceremony of the 4th international conference titled Rethinking Religion in India: Religion, Secularism, and Law at SDM Law College today, Prof. S. N. Balagangadhara, director of India Platform of Ghent University in Belgium, said that the modern concept of human rights is rooted in religious theology and was later secularized.
Further explaining his statement, Prof. Balu said that, although humanity has recently defined the concept of human rights, he said that the concept always existed in religious theology, adding that people decided to get rid of the God word only recently.
In his inaugural address, Rev. Aloysius Paul D’Souza said that religion plays a major role in helping humanity get over political, social, and moral crisis.
Charly Poppe, first secretary of the Belgian Embassy, and SL Bhoje Gowda, member of the Bar Council of India at Bangalore, also addressed the gathering.
Among those present were SDME Society Vice President Prof. S. Prabhakar and SDM Law College Principal Dr. B. K. Ravindra.
The conference has been organized by SDM Law College of Mangalore, SDM Centre for PG Studies and Research in Law of Mangalore, Research Centre Vergelijkende Cultuurwetenshap of Ghent University of Belgium, Centre for the Study of Local Cultures and PGD of Law of Kuvempu University, Department of Study of Religions of University of Parbudice of Czech Republic, and the India Platform UGent of Ghent University of Belgium.
The conference will conclude on Nov 27.
