Complaints pour in at police phone-in programme in Udupi

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, August 20, 2017: At least 28 calls poured in for the maiden one hour police phone in programme in Udupi.  Issues ranging from gambling and overcharging by autorickshaw drivers to overspeeding of buses, shrill horns and traffic problems figured in the first phone-in programme organised by the district police here on August 19, Saturday. Superintendent of Police Sanjeev M. Patil himself answered the calls.

Udupi SP M Patil

SP  Patil said the information gathered by him during the phone-in programme would be shared with the police stations concerned so that they could take action on it. If the police stations were found wanting on this count, he would take action on it, he said. Tough action would be taken to deal with gambling (matka).

Some of the callers, during the phone-in programme, had given exact details of where the matka was going on and who were running it.  A total of 134 cases against matka were registered in 2016. Till July this year, as many as 126 cases were booked, he said.

Promising a caller of action, SP Patil said he would himself visit the matka spots mentioned by the former coming under the Kota police station limits and take action.  A caller from Kota police station limits said that sand and big boulders were being illegally transported in lorries and the local police personnel were allegedly getting bribes and not taking action on it. However, some members of the public said now as the culprits were warned by media etc....they would lie low for a time or move the dens.

Shrill horns: A total of 79 cases had been booked against vehicles using shrill horns in and around Udupi and Manipal on Saturday. The police took this action after getting complaints about shrill horns being used by vehicles, said Sanjeev M. Patil, Superintendent of Police, in a release.
