Mangaluru, July 12, 2026: Panakkad Sayyid Naser Abdul Hayya Shihabuddin Thangal Ba-Alavi has been appointed as the new Qazi of Dakshina Kannada district, filling the vacancy created by the demise of Al-Haj Twaka Ahmed Musliyar.
The appointment was officially announced on Saturday by Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, president of the management committee of Zeenath Baksh Central Juma Masjid and Eidgah Masjid, Mangaluru.

The announcement followed a meeting of representatives and leaders from various masjids convened under the leadership of the Zeenath Baksh Central Juma Masjid management committee, where Thangal’s acceptance of the responsibility was formally declared.
Among those present were Eidgah and Central Juma Masjid vice-president K. Ashraf, general secretary Muhammad Haneef Haji, treasurer S. M. Rasheed Haji, committee members Samad Haji, Addu Haji and Ashraf Halemane, Dakshina Kannada District Madrasa Management president Moidinabba Haji, Yenepoya Javed, and other community leaders.
Born on May 2, 1966, at Poovad near Panakkad in Kerala’s Malappuram district, Thangal received his early education at Othupalli and underwent 13 years of advanced Islamic studies through the traditional Palli Dars system. A scholar of the Yemeni Sayyid lineage tracing ancestry to the family of Prophet Muhammad, he has served as a khateeb and mudarris at several masjids and Islamic institutions after obtaining his sanad (scholarly certification).
Following his father’s demise, he became the Qazi of the Andaman Islands and was later appointed Grand Qazi of Kozhikode in 2009. He currently serves as Qazi for more than 300 mohallas across Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad and Thrissur districts.
Thangal is also the principal of Imam Gazzali Academy and Rashidiya Arabic College in Wayanad, patron of the Scine Institute of Social Leadership, president of the Sunni Mahal Federation Malappuram district Maslahat Committee, a member of the Sunni Yuvajana Sangha Kerala State Committee, and vice-president of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama Tirurangadi Taluk Committee.
