City gives a rousing welcome to Special Olympic winners

Mangalore, Dec 18, 2013: Two students of St Agnes Special School, Bendur, who represented the Indian cricket team in Special Olympics Asia Pacific (SOAP) Regional Games in Sydney were given a rousing welcome at the KSRTC Bus stand on December 18, Wednesday.

The students Danan Saldanha and Moideen Thazman were accompanied with their Physical Education Instructor and coach Narayan Sherigar in the Special Olympics Asia Pacific (SOAP) Regional Games held from November 26 to December 8 and have succeeded in getting second place.


Speaking on the occasion, he said that the specially abled children have made an achievement in the special Olympics held in Sydney without any financial support from the government. In spite of so many hurdles, the students have secured second place in cricket.


He also said that even though minister for fisheries and Youth sports Abhaychandra Jain had directed us to meet higher officials in Bangalore for financial support, our waiting from morning till evening went in vain and had to leave to Australia in the evening flight at our own expenses to participate in the sports. But still it’s a matter of pride that, Moideen Thazman bagged the best bowler award, while Danan Saldanha secured best batsman award.


MLA J R Lobo felicitated students with garlands and said that the students of St Agnes Special School have brought laurels to the district, state and country with their talent and effort.


The special abled children of our district are doing wonders in the Special Olympics; hence he will try his best to encourage such students, he said.


MCC Deputy Commissioner Gokuldas, St Agnes Special School principal Sr Maria Shruthi, Joint Secretary Sr Olivia, Ln Leslie D’Souza Lions District Co-ordinator for special Olympics, Danan Saldanha’s mother Jacintha Saldanha, sister Dimple Saldanha and Moideen Thazman’s father Mohammed KP were also present.


Later they were taken on a procession from KSRTC to the St Agnes Special school grounds.
