Mangaluru, Sept 12, 2025: Approval has been granted by the Centre for the construction of a bypass road between Surathkal and BC Road on the National Highway, said MP Brijesh Chowta. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared in this regard, he added.
He was speaking after chairing a meeting with National Highway Authority officials at the Circuit House on Thursday.
“The Surathkal–BC Road stretch has several issues. To address these, the National Highways Authority, Police Department, and Mangaluru City Corporation must work in coordination. Black spots need to be identified, and plans for service roads and drainage systems should be included in the DPR. Wherever necessary, concrete roads, upgraded junctions, and connecting roads should be developed. The Authority should expedite the works,” the MP said.
He also informed that a request has been made to the Minister to upgrade the existing Surathkal–BC Road stretch and build service roads, and the response from the Minister has been positive.
“Despite repeated repairs, potholes continue to form on the highway. The permanent solution is to build concrete roads. First, service roads will be constructed to provide alternative routes for traffic, followed by the construction of concrete roads. A deadline of October 15 has been set for the construction of service roads near Nanthoor. If not completed, the tender will be changed,” said NHAI Project Director Javed Azmi.
MCC has been directed to immediately take up pothole filling on city roads, especially before Navaratri and Dasara processions, to avoid inconvenience to the public. The Pumpwell–Karakala Circle road, tendered three years ago, has deteriorated badly and must be repaired on priority, said MLA Vedavyas Kamath.
MLA Bharath Shetty, ACP (Traffic Sub-Division) Najma Farooqi, Traffic Inspectors Shivakumar Muggalli and Krishnananda, MCC engineer Naresh Shenoy, former mayor Premanand Shetty, Praveen, and others were present.
Highlighting the risk of accidents due to roadside shops along the highway, MP Brijesh Chowta directed officials to conduct a survey and remove all unauthorized shops that pose danger to road users.
