Mangalore, Jan 12, 2012: D. V. Sadananda Gowda, the chief minister of Karnataka, inaugurated the 17th edition of the National Youth Festival (NYF), at Mangala Stadium on Jan 12 Thursday. This event commemorates the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanana, which is celebrated on Jan 12. 


The NYF has been jointly organized by the central government, the Nehru Yuva Kendra, the Rashtriya Seva Yojana, and the government of Karnataka.

In his inaugural address, the chief minister said that the festival brings together young people from all over the country, providing a platform for them to showcase their talents, traditions, and culture, thus illustrating India’s unity in diversity. 


Stating that the event commemorates the 149th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, he added that the event is held in honor of the Swamiji who worked tirelessly for social welfare. The chief minister promised that meaningful programs will be planned to celebrate his future birth anniversaries. He also urged the youth to use their energy to build the nation with enthusiasm. 


M. Veerappa Moily, the union minister for corporate affairs, was the chief guest of the event while Mr. Ajay Maken, the union minister of state for youth affairs and sports, was the guest of honor.


Shri Veerendra Heggade, the dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala, was also the guest of honor.


Lauding the organizers, he said that it is the most well organized event he had ever seen. Stating that the country has developed a lot in the past 60 years, he said that Indians have bagged a number of medals and brought honor to the country. He also said that the youth must follow in the footsteps of Swami Vivekananda.  


Mr. Maken then conferred the National Youth Awards on 28 individuals and 2 organizations. 


Around 5000 young people from all over the country are participating in the event, which is being held under the theme of “celebrating diversity in unity.” Young people from SAARC countries are also participating in the event. 


N. Yogesh Bhat, the deputy speaker; District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar; MP Nalin Kumar Kateel; DC Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda; MLA U. T. Khader; MLA Mallika Prasad; athlete Ashwini Nachappa; and many other dignitaries were present on the dais.
