Brahmana Maha Sabha holds protest march decrying ‘janivara’ removal incidents

Mangaluru, April 23, 2025: Hundreds of people took out a rally in Mangaluru on Tuesday protesting the incidents of students being asked to remove ‘janivara’ (‘sacred thread’) before the Common Entrance Test (CET) in different parts of the State recently.

Converging under the banner of the Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Maha Sabha (AKBMS), Dakshina Kannada district unit, the protesters marched from Sharavu Maha Ganapathi temple to the mini Vidhana Soudha through Ganapathi High School Road and submitted a memorandum to the government through Assistant Commissioner A.J. Harshevardhana.

Speaking on the occasion, D. Vedavyasa Kamath, Mangaluru City South MLA, said the incidents indicated the anti-Hindu mindset of the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah. He said wearing ‘janivara’ was a part of Indian tradition. Ridiculing it could not be tolerated, Mr. Kamath said, adding there was a specific ritual even to remove ‘janivara.’

Apart from Brahmins, Saraswats, Khatriyas, Vishwakarmas and even Billavas engaged in puja rituals, wear the ‘sacred thread.’

The MLA said the Siddaramaiah government should immediately apologise to the people of Karnataka for the mischief played on Hindus and render justice to the affected students.

Holding placards, the protesters shouted slogans demanding justice to the affected students along the protest march.

Kateel Sri Durga Parameshwari Temple heriditary priests Lakshminarayana Asranna and Kamaladevi Prasada Asranna, Sharavu Temple Moktesara Sharavu Raghavendra Shastri, AKBMS DK representative Mahesh Kaje, Secretary Sridhar Holla, former Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Harikrishna Punarur, educationist M B Puranik, Kalkura Foundation President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, BJP DK unit President Satish Kumpala, Karnataka Bank retired managing director M S Mahabaleshwara, Nammavaru Mangaluru patron Gururaj Molakalmur and others led the procession.
