Mangalore, June 23, 2011: A boat called Shri Ram, belonging to Pramila Kotian of Tota Bengre, capsized on the morning of Tuesday because of huge, high waves.
Luckily, crew members Raghavendra, Rajesh, Prabhakar, and Pramod Kotian swam to safety, after struggling with the waves for more than one hour. Reportedly, the crew hung on to a plank that came loose from the body of the boat and that is supposed to have helped them reach the shore safely.
The crew had left the old port at 6:00 a.m. and the boat capsized when they were returning at 11:00 p.m. The boat was being operated by Rajesh.
The boat’s outboard engine, net, and body has been badly damaged, causing a total financial loss of Rs. 2,05,000.
About 50 fishermen helped pull the damaged boat to the shore.
