Mangalore, Dec 23, 2011: With Christmas round the corner, Rev. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore Diocese, has extended his Christmas greetings to the society. In his Christmas message, the Bishop has said that the Christmas celebrations this year calls for some concern towards the poor and destitutes in the society.
Speaking to pressmen at the Bishop House in Mangalore on December 23, Friday, the Bishop said Christ came into the world to bring peace, and added in the modern world Christ’s message of peace and fraternity was relevant at all times.
Speaking about the significance of the season, the Bishop said Christmas also conveys the message to serve the poor in the society with the message “Shelter to the destitutes.’ He said Christmas was one festival people celebrate irrespective of caste, creed or region.
On the post-centenary silver jubilee programmes of the Mangalore Diocese, the Bishop said there were plans to construct student hostels to facilitate rural students from economically backward families, who aspire for higher education. The Diocese, he said has also decided to provide free education to poor students in church affiliated schools and colleges.
“Christmas thus gives a call to us to give some thoughts to the problems of the poor and destitutes in the society,” the Bishop said.
He said the Mangalore Diocese as a part of its post-centenary silver jubilee celebrations has decided to construct 160 houses for the economically backward people and added construction of 60 houses was presently in progress. The Bishop further said that the Diocese’s social development organization CODP has joined hands in the various social service missions of the Diocese.
