Mangalore, Dec 11, 2011: Beary lexicon should be developed – Veerappa Moily
M Veerappa Moily, the union minister for corporate affairs, inaugurated an event titled Sahithigalondige Makhamudki, held on the second day of the Beary Sammelan in Town Hall and spoke of the need to develop a Beary lexicon.
He also urged Beary writers to provide new words to the Beary vocabulary as this is the only way to protect and preserve the language. He also promised that he will discuss the matter of developing a lexicon for the Beary language at the centre if the academy submitted a proposal.
In his inaugural address, he stressed on the need for unity in diversity and warned about ploys to divide society. Stating that India is a land of multiple cultures, he said that pluralism is its essence and any attempt to unite people as a single cultural group will destroy the pluralistic fabric of India.
Speaking about the Bearys, he said that the Beary language has a 3000-year old history and that the Bearys are the original inhabitants of the coastal region. He also urged Tulu and Beary communities to grow side by side in unity.
Vaidehi, the renowned Kannada writer, presided over the event. Jayanth Kaikini, the writer, and P. Sheshadri, the award-winning movie director, spoke about the role of the cinema in enriching language. The moderator of the event was Shamshuddin Madikeri.
Moily was honored with a shawl by B. A. Moideen, the former minister. G. A. Bava, the KPCC joint secretary and former police officer, was also honored. District-in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar presented mementos to the guests.
Among the dignitaries present was M. B. Abdul Rahman, the president of the Beary Academy.
