Mangalore, Nov 7, 2011: The All India Christian Council (AICC) and the Karnataka Missions Network (KMN) jointly organized a persecuted pastors/Christians conference and a press conference at Shanthi Kiran in Bajjodi, Mangalore today, during which they condemned Subrahmanyam Swamy’s statements against minorities, his opposition of the communal violence prevention bill, and repeated vandalism in churches across Mangalore.
Dignitaries such as Justice Michael Saldanha, the Karnataka state president of AICC; Anand Kumar Jogul, the coordinator; Walter J. Maben, the chairman of KMN; and K. L. Ashok, the general secretary of Karnataka State Komu Souharda Vedike, were also present.
Lamenting that violence against minorities is on the rise in Karnataka, MP, UP, Orissa, North East India, and Gujarath, Justice Saldanha said that, although the media labels these attacks as acts of violence, the minorities consider it as terrorism. He blamed the Sangh Parivar and its political allies of attempting to communalize the state while making scapegoats of isolated individuals. He urged the government to take stern legal action against the accused.
Addressing reporters, Walter Maben said that law-enforcement agencies must investigate the recent attacks on a chapel near Padua High School, St. Theresa High School, and St. Alphonsa Church in Kankanady. He also pointed out that over 1000 people, including pastors, have already become victims.
Speaking on the occasion, K. L. Ashok urged the CM of Karnataka to restore the communal harmony that the district had enjoyed before the BJP-led state government came to power.
