ABVP protests against professional course admission fee hike

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, April 10, 2012: The Akhil Bharathiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organized a protest against the fee hike for engineering, medical, and dental courses on April 10 Tuesday.

The protestors demanded immediate withdrawal of fee hike for professional courses. As part of their protest, they formed a human chain at Karnataka Polytechnic Circle (KPT), leading to traffic block.

Stating that the government’s move to hike fees of professional courses goes against the best interests of poor students, they said that the government has proposed 10 percent hike in the admission fees for professional course during this academic year. They also warned of intensifying their protest if the government fails to agree to their demands.

Accusing the government of bowing to the pressure of private professional colleges, they said that 85 percent medical seats were under the power of the government in 1994, but now only 42 percent seats in private medical colleges are under government quota while government quota seats in engineering and dental colleges have come down from 85 percent to 45 percent and 35 percent, respectively.

Expressing concerns about the situation, Chinmay Rai, the Mangalore city secretary of ABVP, said that if the state government continues to surrender government quota seats in medical, dental, and engineering colleges to private colleges, poor students can never hope to become doctors, dentists, or engineers.
