8 persons sentenced to 7 years jail for robbing car buyer

Mangaluru, April 3, 2022: The third additional district and sessions court sentenced eight persons to rigorous imprisonment of seven years each, for robbing a second-hand car buyer, here on Friday.

Judge Basappa Balappa Jakati held Shiva Prasad alias Ayyappa, Sudheer, Varun Kumar, Suvin Kanchan alias Munna, Sandeep Poojari, Karthik Shetty, Gopala Gowda and Sujith Shetty guilty for robbing Rs 2 lakh from a car buyer.

Complainant Chidananda Shetty, a resident of Ashok Nagar in the city, was searching for a second-hand car. One of the accused, Sudheer, contacted Shetty and introduced himself as Avinash. Sudheer told Shetty that his uncle had an old car for sale. Accordingly, Shetty and his friends Ashwith and Shivaprasad, reached Talippady village in a car, with Rs 2 lakh to be paid in advance. Meanwhile, the eight-member gang arrived in vehicles, armed with a sword, iron rod and knuckle duster. They robbed Rs 2 lakh from them. The accused also assaulted Ashwith and damaged Shivaprasad’s car.

Based on a complaint filed by Shetty, a case under sections 395(punishment for dacoity), 397 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) and 440 (mischief committed after making preparation for causing death or hurt) of the IPC was registered at Mulki police station. The court, after hearing 19 witnesses, pronounced the verdict. While all accused have been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment, a fine of Rs 5,000 under Section 395 of the IPC has also been imposed upon each of them. They will have to undergo two months of simple imprisonment, in case of failure to pay the penalty. Meanwhile, the court also awarded two years of simple imprisonment and a penalty of Rs 5,000 upon each of the convicts.

The ninth accused in the case, Narayan Das, who arranged a mobile phone SIM card for the convicts, is still at large. Public prosecutor U Narayana Sherigar argued on behalf of the prosecution.
