Mangalore, Feb 23, 2012: The Indian Library Association (ILA), St. Agnes Centre of PG Studies and Research, and the Karnataka State College Librarians’ Association (KSCLA) jointly organized the 57th All India Library Conference on Feb 23 Thursday, based on the theme of “knowledge society: innovations in librarianship.”
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Dr. V. G. Talwar, the vice chancellor of Mysore University, stated that librarians must concern themselves with issues such as accessibility of e-content and reaching out to the population mass of India. Regretting that infrastructure of libraries is something neglected in the country, he said that there should be more libraries in rural areas, where over 70 percent of the Indian population lives. He also suggested the use of mobile devices to reach out to the people in rural areas.
Prof. B. M. Hegde, the dean of Manipal University; Dharm Veer Singh, the president of Indian Library Association; and Prof. Bharath Mehra, the university librarian of University of Tennessee, also spoke on the occasion.
An exhibition of books was also organized.
Among those present were S. L. Kadadevaramath, the president of KSCLA; Prof. Khaisar M. Khan, the director of the conference; Dr. Prem D’Souza, the principal of St. Agnes College; and Dr. Anuradha Gupa, the general secretary of ILA, among others.
