Mangalore, Nov 28, 2012 : Deputy Speaker of the Karnataka State Legislative Assembly N. Yogish Bhat said that 3D technology will be adopted for the planetarium in Pilikula.
Further, Mr. Bhat said that the state government has received a proposal for the construction of a planetarium in Pilikula, adding that the government is willing to provide funds for the project. The government has also appointed a 2-member technical advisory committee chaired by Prof. C. S. Shukre, the previous director of Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium in Bangalore.
He said that the state government is willing to release required funds as per the committee’s recommendations. The committee had recommended that the planetarium must be a hybrid with a dome 15m in diameter and should incorporate digital and opto-mechanical technology. The committee has estimated that the project will cost Rs. 15.50 crore and the government has accepted this estimation.
Meanwhile, the technical committee, visited several planetariums across India to make an in-depth study of them. The committee also submitted its report to the government. Besides, it submitted an interim report of its technical meetings to the department of bio technology, information technology, and science. So far, the committee has held 11 meetings to discuss a wide range of issues regarding the planetarium.
Recently, the committee reworked the estimates and reported that the total cost of a planetarium with a dome 18m in diameter will be Rs. 24.50 crore. The reworked estimates got the government nod and the committee continued with the next phase of preparing plans in consultation with M/s Terra Firma, Bangalore.
During its 11th meeting, the technical advisory committee approved the final plans and estimates and requested the architect to send the related documents to Pilikula Regional Science Centre Society for approval.
The government has already released Rs. 11 crore for the construction of this planetarium, which will be named after Swami Vivekananda.
