New Delhi, Sept. 7, 2025: Days after US President Donald Trump called India-US ties a “very special relationship,” former Indian diplomat K.P. Fabian said the American leader has realised his aggressive trade tactics with India have failed.
Fabian noted that Trump’s threat of an additional 25% tariff over India’s Russian oil imports did not work, as India stood firm. He termed the tariffs “Trumped-up Trump Tariff” — without basis and driven by miscalculation.
“India is a civilisational state. It cannot be a meek camp follower. India seeks friendship and fair trade, but not one-sided diktats,” Fabian said.
On Friday, Trump said he would “always be friends” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, despite his “displeasure” over some recent moves. Modi responded on Saturday, affirming that India “deeply appreciates and fully reciprocates” Trump’s sentiments, calling ties “forward-looking” towards a global strategic partnership.
