Opposition Targets BJP Over US Mediation Claims on India-Pakistan ceasefire

New Delhi, May 11, 2025: The Opposition intensified its criticism of the ruling BJP on Sunday following claims by the United States regarding its role in mediating between India and Pakistan. The Congress party questioned whether the Modi government has abandoned the Simla Agreement and allowed third-party involvement in resolving bilateral issues.

India-Pakistan ceasefire

US President Donald Trump on Sunday reiterated his willingness to mediate, stating that he would work with India and Pakistan to explore a resolution to the Kashmir issue, which he described as a conflict persisting for “a thousand years.” This statement followed his earlier claim that the US played a role in securing a ceasefire between the two countries. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that India and Pakistan are expected to hold talks at a “neutral site.”

Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh demanded an all-party meeting and a special session of Parliament to discuss critical issues, including the reported US-led ceasefire negotiations, Operation Sindoor, and developments in Pahalgam.

“Congress considers the mention of a ‘neutral site’ by Secretary Rubio for India-Pakistan talks deeply concerning. Have we abandoned the Simla Agreement? Are we now open to third-party mediation?” Ramesh posted on X (formerly Twitter). The Simla Agreement stipulates that India and Pakistan resolve disputes bilaterally, without external intervention.

Ramesh further sought clarity on whether diplomatic channels between India and Pakistan are being reopened and what assurances New Delhi has received from Islamabad. He also highlighted remarks by retired General Manoj Naravane, who welcomed the ceasefire but warned against India’s reactive approach to cross-border terror incidents.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut criticized the BJP on X, describing the situation as a “huge insult” and urging the Prime Minister to convene an all-party meeting. “If you have the courage... the Prime Minister should be present,” Raut wrote.

Senior RJD MP Manoj K Jha expressed outrage over Trump’s statements, calling them “shocking, bizarre, and disgusting to the core.” He criticized Trump’s reference to “a thousand years,” pointing out that Pakistan has existed for only 78 years. Jha also questioned the Modi government’s muted response to the US claims.

The issue has ignited a fresh political debate, with the Opposition accusing the government of compromising India’s long-standing diplomatic principles and demanding greater transparency in its handling of foreign policy.
