Guwahati, June 1, 2025: In a grim sequence of events, at least 30 people have lost their lives across the northeastern states of India over the past two days due to landslides and flash floods triggered by incessant rainfall. Today alone, 14 fatalities were reported, with Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram bearing the brunt of nature’s fury.
Over 60,000 people in 12 districts of Assam have been affected, with six districts currently under floodwaters. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed that five lives were lost to landslides in the Kamrup Metropolitan district. Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah revealed that three women perished in a landslide in Guwahati’s Bonda area. Notably, Guwahati recorded 111 mm of rainfall, breaking a 67-year record for single-day precipitation.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red and orange alert for parts of Assam, while the rest of the northeast remains under orange and yellow alerts. Rising water levels in several rivers, including the Brahmaputra, have exacerbated the situation.
Tragedy in Arunachal Pradesh: Seven Lives Lost in East Kameng
In a heartbreaking incident, seven members of two families died when a landslide swept their vehicle into a gorge along NH-13 in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Kameng district. The victims were traveling in a Brezza car when the landslide occurred between Bana and Seppa.
