Assam floods: 8 dead, 5 go missing as heavy rain swamps over 1,000 villages

Guwahati, May 19, 2022: The flood situation continues to remain grim in Assam with more than 1,089 villages across 26 districts still submerged. At least eight people have lost their lives in the state so far due to floods and landslides.

While two in Cachar and one person in Udalguri lost their lives due to the floods, four in Dima Hasao and one person in Lakhimpur, have died in landslides.

Meanwhile, five other people, including four in Cachar and one in Nagaon district, have gone missing. Over four lakh people have been affected by the deluge.

The Army, para-military forces, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, and the fire and emergency services of the state police have evacuated at least 3,427 people stuck in their homes.

As many as 142 relief camps and 115 relief distribution centres have been set up by the respective district administrations where a total of 39, 558 affected villagers have taken shelter.

At present, the river Kopili is flowing above the danger-level mark at Kampur and Dharamtul, the river Disang at Nanglamuraghat, the river Barak at AP ghat, and the river Kushiyara at Karimganj.

Meanwhile, the Guwahati-based Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region in the coming days.

The Met department has stated that the region has received more rainfall than usual and will continue to receive more rainfall for the next couple of days. The department, however, said the weather conditions in the region might improve slightly from Friday.
