Bengaluru residents honour stray dog with touching mural, internet in tears

Bengaluru, July 12, 2025: The viral image of the mural was shared on X by a user named Nithin Kumar, who is an employee at Zerodha. In his post, Kumar highlighted that JP Nagar’s Dollar Colony locals adored Pikachu so much that they built a memorial for the dog when he passed away.

“A little tribute to a stray dog named Pikachu. People loved him so much they made art for him," Kumar said.

The image showed the carving of Pikachu surrounded by handwritten notes sharing his story. The messages mentioned that Pikachu was rescued as a puppy and soon became everyone’s favourite in the neighbourhood.

“Bengaluru has a big heart," Kumar noted in his post.

Reacting to the post, a local replied: “Very happy to see that our dearest Pikachu is warming the hearts of so many people. We love him and miss him so much that we created this little shrine for him."

This gesture by Dollar Colony locals coincides with a new initiative by Bengaluru’s civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), to feed nearly 5,000 stray dogs daily. This move is aimed at reducing dog aggression and improving public safety in the city.

The civic body will undertake the task of feeding 5,000 strays across eight zones in the first phase of the project. Under the initiative, each dog receives a 367 gram cooked meal daily, including chicken and rice. The meal plan for the dogs have been designed keeping in mind the nutritional needs of a 15kg dog. Around 100-125 feeding zones will be set up by the BBMP for this initiative and each zone will cater to around 500 dogs.

Bengaluru is home to nearly 2.8 lakh stray dogs and growing dog aggression has been a key issue in the city. As the project progresses, the BBMP is likely to expand the feeding programme beyond the initial 5,000 dogs.
