Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Feb 10, 2012: The Youth Congress of Kaup and Udupi organized a religious ceremony to purify St. Mary’s Island, which they felt was polluted by the rave party organized as a music and art festival by the district administration in association with a private company, on Feb 10 Friday. They conducted Vedic rituals at the venue.

Pramod Madhwaraj, the president of the Udupi Block Congress, informed the gathering that the undivided DK district is believed to have emerged when Parashurama, the ancient sage, hit his axe on the ground. Owing to the holiness of the place, it remains free from natural calamities such as tsunamis.

Stating that the consumption of drugs, the semi nudity, and the open display of promiscuity have polluted the sacred atmosphere of the island, owing to which it had to be cleansed with Vedic rituals, he said that such festivals must not be organized in future. He also stated that it is unfortunate that the state government is following the example of Goa and Kerala.

According to sources, contraceptives, bottles of beer, and syringes were found during the cleanliness drive.

Nikhil Umesh Gowda, the president of the Udupi – Chikmagalur Youth Congress; Veronica Cornelio, the president of the Congress Women’s Wing; Sarasu Bangera, the former president of the ZP;  and Congress workers such as Abdul Aziz Hejamady, Sulochana Damodar, Navinchandra Shetty, Yathish Karkera, and others were also present.
