Yoga Guinness Record: Torture of school children for ego trips?

Yoga Guinness Record: Torture of school children for ego trips?

Mangalore Today News Network

By Prof. Narendra Nayak, President, Federation of Indian Rationalist Association
Mangalore, Dec 13, 2013:
If one were to go by the latest attempt by a group in Dakshina Kannada to make an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records, this question does have to pop up. Perhaps the person, under whose directions (or is it leadership?) the so called Guinness Book of World Records entry attempt is allegedly being made is also well known for his de-addiction camps, does well realize that this Guinness is a popular Irish dry stout that originated in the brewery of Arthur Guinness (1725–1803) at St. James’s Gate, Dublin. Guinness is one of the most successful beer brands worldwide. It is brewed in almost 60 countries and is available in over 100. Annual sales total 850 million litres (1.5 billion imperial or 1.8 billion US pints).

Sir Hugh Beaver, Chairman of the Guinness Brewery, is out hunting game birds by the River Slaney in County Wexford, Ireland, when he misses a shot at a golden plover. Sir Hugh wonders if the plover is the fastest game bird in Europe but can’t find a reference book that answers the question.

When I had gone to t a school called Sharada Vidyalaya at Mangalore there were a few thousand children sprawled on the grounds engaging themselves in contortions under the directions of someone on the stage. Also, on the stage were some VIPs which included the minister of the Govt. of Karnataka Sri U.T.Khader, the Minister for Health who perhaps does not realize that the promotion of health is perhaps not making children roll on the ground under hot sun and perhaps one would like to ask him whether he would do the same to his children. Perhaps the same question would have to be asked to the person Sri Veerendra Hegde that whether the same exercise was one of child abuse to satisfy some one’s ego or to boost one’s sagging image or an attempt to teach yoga?

Yoga is supposed to be practiced during the Brahmi Muhurtha which is around 4.30 am, well before sunrise. Here the same is being done at 10 am or so under the hot sun without any shelter just to  ‘create’ an event which could earn one’s place in the Guinness Book  of World Records? Can this even be called yoga, a practice that originated and always belonged among the ascetics of ancient India? Are these young children ascetics of any kind? Have they followed the yama and niyama, that are of paramount importance before anyone can practice yoga? Perhaps it could earn a place under the category of an event where the maximum number of children were tortured under the hot sun under the guise of a yoga class? This too, when the courts have frowned upon the practice of children being used, to satisfy the egos of VIPs and made to wait for hours to ‘welcome’ them? Does this not amount to violation of child rights? Should not the education department, the CWC and the Childline enquire into this so called yoga class which is just an attempt to boost the sagging image of a group which could also try for a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the maximum unnatural deaths of  women of a particular age group in a single location? One would also wonder as to why the claimants of a legacy of the ancient civilization of India look up to getting a place in an organization created by a beer manufacturer as a sort of advertising tool for its product? Or does it show  the desperateness of  the person who is supposed to be the driving force behind this so called event?

Shameful act to enter the Guinness Book of Records asking the children to roll on the ground under the sun. Selfish act to popularize the yoga!!
