Mangalore, Oct 4: Prof T. C. Shivashankar Moorthy, the vice chancellor of Mangalore University, inaugurated the post graduate commerce course at the University College on Oct 4, Monday and said in his inaugural speech that the University College was considered to be the best college in the 70s. He added that University College has an excellent teaching faculty when compared to other colleges.

The Mangalore University is going the extra mile to establish University College as a model college and encourage its faculty. A fund of Rs. 5 crore has been earmarked for the development of University College, another Rs. 5 crore has been earmarked for Kariappa College Madikeri, and another Rs. 10 crore has been set aside for Mangalore University, he said.

Further explaining the funds, he said that Rs. 1 crore should be utilized in a month; and already Rs. 23 lakh has been spent for the construction of two rooms at University College. He added that Rs. 3 – 4 crore is required to develop the infrastructure of the college.

Suggesting that the University College must establish research centres, he said that there are already around 65 – 70 research centres in the university. He revealed the fact that Mangalore University is considered to be the best university for research activities and that it occupies the second position for research in Karnataka.

Principal Lakshminarayana Bhat delivered the welcome address, and Dr. Yathish Kumar was the comperer. Chairman of Corporation Bank B. R. Bhat, Jayaram Hande, Registrar of Mangalore University Chinnappa Gowda, HOD of Commerce Department at Mangalore University Dr. P. S. Yedapadithaya, MCom Coordinator C. K. Hebbar were present on the dais.
