Udupi, 23 October 2010: Unexpected heavy rain that has been pouring since few days gained momentum on Thursday night and continued through Friday causing flood in low lying areas in the city and all over the district. Although the rains were persistent with a few thunders and lightning, it left a trail of damage across the district. The harvested paddy crop that has been lying in the fields perished due to continuous rainfall and flood water.

The traffic on the NH 17 and city streets faced snarls due to flooding. Several shops and houses located along the streets were inundated. The Ratha Beedi, Bannanje, Buddar, Matadabettu and other low-lying areas in the city were flooded. The general life was put out of gear by the unforeseen rains at this time of the year.


Places including Upoor, Kalianpura, Korangrapadi, Bailur, Marne, Udyavara, Manipura, Kalsanka, Gundibail, Bailakere, Bannaje and other areas were flooded causing people to evacuate to safer places. Deputy Commissioner and Revenue Officers visited the flooded areas. Fire brigade, home guards and local youth helped in the evacuation.
