Mangalore, Dec 12, 2011: Umanath Kotian, the Tulu actor and vice president of the district BJP, took over as the president of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy on Dec 12 Monday, as the successor of Dr. Palthady Ramakrishna Achar for a period of 3 years. 


In his address, Dr. Achar urged the gathering to continue working for the development of Tulu language. Regretting that the construction of Tulu Bhavan near Urwa is being unnecessarily delayed, he urged the new president to prioritize this issue and construct the Tulu Bhavan before the end of his term. 


Regarding the teaching of Tulu in schools, he said that teaching Tulu in schools will increase its chances of survival. Since the proposal to teach Tulu up to VIII Std. has been approved, he said that 200 teachers will be trained for the purpose. He also said that Mangalore University will soon start 3 Tulu courses.

Speaking on the occasion, Umanath Kotian promised to work with the 10 new committee members for the progress of Tulu language and culture. 


Jagannatha Shetty Bala of Mangalore, Padmanabha S. Bhat of Yekkar, Prof. Thukaram Poojary of Bantwal, Prabhakar Shetty of Bangalore, Kadri Navaneeth Shetty of Mangalore, B. V. Sooryanarayan of Puttur, Ramesh Kalmadi of Karkala, Yadava Karkera of Padubidri, Manjula Shetty of Mangalore, and Durgakumar Nairkere of Sullia are the 10 newly appointed members of the academy. They were also especially welcomed on the occasion. 


Among the dignitaries present were Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat, the Dakshin Kshetra Sampark Pramukh of RSS; Nagaraj Shetty, the president of the Coastal Development Authority; Padmanabha Kottari, the president of the district BJP; and Chandrahas Rai, the registrar of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy.
