Mangalore, June 17, 2012: The Ullal police have arrested two people on grounds of being involved in the murder of Vinayak (24), security guard at a local fish mill.
The arrested are Mannan alia Munaf of Ullal and Kabir alias Chota Kabir of Kotepur. On the night of June 13, the two allegedly killed Vinayak with a sharp weapon.
A few days before he was murdered, Vinayak had reported the theft of spare machine parts at Indian Fish Mill in Kotepur, where he was employed as the security guard. Although aware that Kabir had stolen the spare parts, Vinayak did not disclose the information to the police because Kabir was his friend.
The night he was murdered, Vinayak quarreled with Kabir regarding this issue. In the course of the argument, Vinayak threatened that he would tell the police the truth. In a fit of rage, Kabir hit Vinayak with the spare parts he had stolen. When he realized that Vinayak was dead, he wrapped the body with a bed sheet and hid it in the godown. He planned to throw the body into the sea with the help of his friend Munaf early the next morning. The two, however, woke up too late the next morning and had to cancel their original plan.
Vinayak’s slippers led the police to the murderer. Kabir had worn Vinayak’s slippers and gone home, but he had discarded the slippers near his house. The sniffer dogs led the Ullal police team to the slippers. When police arrested Kabir and interrogated him, he confessed that he had killed Vinayak.
The Ullal police had previously booked Munaf on 15 counts, but Kabir had never been involved in any major theft although he had stolen a few things here and there.
