Udupi, Feb 07, 2023: With the 120 meter stretch of Vishnumurthi Temple Road in Alevoor and the 120 meter stretch of Swami Vivekananda Road in Maravanthe that were asphalted using shredded plastic waste, remaining in good position even after three years of completion of the project, the Udupi Zilla Panchayat has directed that shredded plastic waste must be used for road works by all government agencies.

The two roads  at Alevoor and Maravanthe were asphalted using plastic waste after a workshop on recycling waste organised by the ZP in December 2019. The training on the technique was provided by Vasudevan of Tamil Nadu, a Padmashree Awardee who is known as plastic-man.

According to Vasudevan 100 kg of plastic waste could be used for 1 km road which will also help reduce cost of construction and ensure good road surface.

ZP CEO H Prasanna said as the authorities already facing problems in disposing plastic waste, the same could be used for asphaltation.

In this backdrop, a January 16 order by the ZP CEO has asked all agencies of the government to mix 10% plastic waste  during road construction and that the shredded plastic is available at the solid waste recovery centres in the district.
