Mangaluru, May 13, 2025: The Mangaluru City Traffic Police, in a special drive, collected ₹2.53 lakh fine by booking 54 cars for violating the Supreme Court ban on the use of tinted car windows and windscreens.

City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, in a statement here, said the drive was conducted from May 2 to May 11 to identify vehicles, particularly cars with tinted windows and windscreens. The police had also opened special check-posts across the Commissionerate to check vehicles and the vehicle documents during the period.

Police fine

The traffic police made the owners or drivers to remove the tinted screens of the windows on the spot and informed them of the legal position. The drive would continue, Mr. Agrawal said urging drivers/owners not to use tint for their vehicle glasses.

The Supreme Court, in the case of Avishek Goenka Vs Union of India, had prohibited the use of black films of any visual light transmission (VLT) percentage or any other material upon the safety glasses, windscreen (front and rear) and side glasses of all vehicles throughout the country with effect from May 4, 2012. The order was passed to prevent alarming rise in heinous crimes.

Mr. Agrawal appealed to vehicle owners/ drivers to voluntarily remove the tints and cooperate with the police. If vehicles were found plying with tinted glasses, suitable action would be taken against the owners/ drivers, under the Motor Vehicles Act, in view of security and safety, he added.
