Udupi: Rapists will not be spared, warns Home Minister, K J George

Udupi, Jun 23, 2013: The police have been directed to conduct a transparent probe into the gang rape of the medical student of Manipal University. The culprits will not be spared whoever they may be. We will ensure that they will get the maximum punishment,” said State Home Minister, KJ George.

 

"Strict action will be taken against the culprits who allegedly gangraped the girl. The accused will be tried in fast track court for their crime so as to give quick justice to the victim and her family," he told reporters here after meeting the victim and her family.

Addressing press persons during his visit to Udupi in the backdrop of the gang rape of a medical student  at Manipal. Strongly condemning the incident, the Home Minister said the incident is shocking and should not be repeated. The investigation is underway and the police department has been given complete freedom  to probe, the minister said.

He also informed that he has met the victim and also spoke to her family and assured them all support from the government. The Home Minister said he has also met all authorities of Manipal University and held discussions  with them.

On the increasing cases of crime in the district,  the minister said  steps would be taken to enhance security and depute more police personnel.

At the same time the minister pointed out that some  private establishments have been non-co-operative in installing CCTV cameras and security men.

Udupi SP Dr Boralingaiah said of the eight teams formed, three have been checking autorickshaws in the town. He said a meeting of autorickshaw unions has been convened and they have been asked to fully co-operate with the probe,

He said the CCTV footage of Manipal University campus does not present the picture clearly  due to dim lights.

IGP Pratap Reddy, MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, district in-charge Minister Vinaykumar Sorake and ADGP (crime and law) Vipin Gopalkrishna were present.
