Udupi, Apr 24, 2026: A resident of Udupi reportedly lost Rs 26.55 lakh in an online investment fraud after being lured by a fraudster who promised high returns on stock market investments through messaging platforms.
According to the complaint, the victim, Jayanth, came in contact with a person identified as Karthik through Telegram nearly two years ago. On January 15, 2026, the accused allegedly contacted him on WhatsApp and convinced him to invest money, assuring attractive profits from stock market trading.
When Jayanth expressed doubts about trusting him, the accused reportedly sent copies of an Aadhaar card, passport, and a photograph to establish credibility. The documents bore the name Mohammed Shafeeq, said to be a resident of Kasaba Bengre in Mangaluru.
Believing the claims, Jayanth transferred a total of Rs 26.55 lakh to various bank accounts shared by the accused via WhatsApp, expecting significant returns. However, the accused neither returned the invested amount nor paid any profits, resulting in a financial loss.
Based on the complaint, the Udupi CEN Police have registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
