Udupi: Government Hospital doctors remove 8-kg uterine fibroid in rare surgery

Udupi, Jun 3, 2026: A team of specialist doctors at the Government Mother and Child Hospital in Udupi successfully performed a rare and complex surgery to remove an 8-kg uterine fibroid from a 44-year-old woman.

The surgery was carried out by a team led by gynaecologists Dr. Shashank Kini, Dr. Jasmine, Dr. Kavitha and Dr. Amrutansh, along with anaesthetists Dr. Suryanarayana and Dr. Rajgopal Bhandary. Nursing officer Rakshitha and OT assistant Sangeetha also assisted in the procedure. The patient is recovering well and continues to receive post-operative care.

The woman had been suffering from abdominal pain for nearly a year and had been undergoing treatment at private hospitals. As the pain persisted, she approached the Government Mother and Child Hospital for further evaluation.

During examination, doctors found that her abdomen was enlarged, resembling that of a pregnant woman, and suspected the presence of a large fluid-filled mass. Subsequent ultrasound and CT scan examinations revealed a massive fibroid tumour in the uterus.

After detailed evaluation and consultations with District Surgeon Dr. H. Ashok, the medical team decided to perform the surgery. The operation was successfully conducted on May 25, during which the giant uterine fibroid weighing approximately 8 kg was removed.

District Surgeon Dr. H. Ashok praised the efforts of the entire medical team and hospital staff for successfully carrying out the challenging procedure.

Expressing gratitude, the patient thanked the doctors and hospital authorities for providing effective treatment without any complications. She said government hospitals should continue to offer advanced medical care to benefit economically weaker sections of society.
