Manipal, July 16, 2026: As many as 146 villages across Udupi district are likely to face a drinking water shortage even before December this year, prompting the district administration to initiate advance measures to tackle the situation.
To ensure uninterrupted water supply, the administration has decided to identify private borewells, open wells and water tankers that can be deployed if required, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Prateek Bayal said during the District Disaster Management Authority meeting held on Wednesday.
According to officials, 146 villages under 94 gram panchayats have been identified as vulnerable to water scarcity. The list includes 21 villages in 17 gram panchayats in Karkala taluk, 57 villages in 36 gram panchayats in Kundapura taluk, six villages in four gram panchayats in Udupi taluk, 22 villages in 15 gram panchayats in Byndoor taluk, 25 villages in 13 gram panchayats in Brahmavar taluk, five villages in four gram panchayats in Kapu taluk, and 10 villages in five gram panchayats in Hebri taluk.
Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K. directed officials to make arrangements to supply drinking water from alternative sources based on local requirements in the identified areas. She also instructed that every effort be made to ensure that no part of the district experiences a shortage of drinking water.
