Mangalore, Feb 9, 2014: DK District in-charge Minister and State Minister for Forest and Ecology B Ramantha Rai has said that the police department has been instructed to initiate stern action against trouble mongers in Ullal or in any other part of the district.
Addressing press persons at Circuit House on February 8, Saturday, the Minister said the situation is peaceful in Ullal and that the town has returned to normalcy. He further said prohibitory orders under Section 144 will continue in Ullal and added the ban orders will be lifted only after reviewing the situation.
At the same time, the minister urged the public not to pay heed to rumours. He said even a peace meeting of leaders of both communities were held in the town and informed that nearly 76 persons including six juveniles have been arrested in connection with the violence.
State Health and Family Welfare Minister UT Khader who also happens to be the MLA of Mangalore (Ullal) constituency, said the acts of vandalism and violence were the handiwork of a few anti-social elements in the area. He urged peace loving people not to give scope for such elements to gain an upper hand.
Mangalore Police Commissioner R Hithendra said the Police Department had issued warrants against as many as 400 persons under IPC 110 and 107 Sections to bring the situation under control. Forty out of these 400 were arrested, he said.
Shanthanu Sinha, District Superintendent of Police and AB Ibrahim, Deputy Commissioner were also present.
The situation in Ullal had almost returned to normalcy on February 8, Saturday with buses plying as usual. No fresh case of violence or untoward incident were reported on Saturday. However schools had remained closed.
