Mangalore, Feb 27, 2012: Since the government has reserved the post of mayor of Mangalore for a Backward Class woman, the number of BJP candidates for this post has plummeted to three—Surekha Shrinivas of the Central Market Ward (Ganiga), Shantha R. of Panjimogaru (Shettigar), and Roopa D. Bangera of Kadri North (Kumbara).
Although Revathi K. of Surathkal West and Rajani Dugganna of Hosabettu also qualify, the party is not enthusiastic about announcing their names as candidates for the post of mayor as Rajani Dugganna has already been the mayor once and Revathi is the chairperson of the standing committee for finance, taxation, and appeals.
The last three mayors—Ganesh Hosabettu of Kulai Ward, Rajani Dugganna of Hosabettu, and M. Shankar Bhat of Derebail East—were all from wards that fell under the Mangalore North Assembly Constituency Praveen Anchan, the present mayor, will complete his term at the end of this month.
