Thousands in DK rise in support of Anna Hazare

Mangalore,Aug 16: A number of protests were organized all over Mangalore against the arrest of Anna Hazare just before his indefinite fast in Delhi to protest against the recently passed ineffective anti-corruption bill. 

When news of Anna Hazare’s arrest spread across the country, a number of social work organizations and political parties organized protest meetings to express their anger against the Delhi police and the union government, which detained Anna Hazare at this house in Mayur Vihar. Some protestors burned copies of the government-approved Lokpal bill and effigies of central leaders, while others lit candles late in the evening.

Protest by BJP Mahila Morcha and Yuva Morcha

The BJP Mahila Morcha and Yuva Morcha organized a joint protest in Mangalore, during which they burned copies of the government-approved Lokpal Bill in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue near Town Hall. They also shouted slogans against the central government’s corrupt policies.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Shrikar Prabhu, the president of the BJP city unit, criticized the central government for its brutal way of silencing people who protest against corruption. Declaring that the sacrifice of one Anna Hazare will lead to the creation of thousands of Anna Hazares all over the nation, he said that the central government is against the welfare of the people. 

Accusing the central government of attempting to divide the people and create a vote bank for itself, Kishore Kumar Shetty, the president of the DK BJP Yuva Morcha, said that the BJP is ready to fight for the country and even sacrifice their lives in the process.

Protest by Akhila Bharathiya Vidhyarthi Parishad

The Akhila Bharathiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also organized a protest in front of KPT, in which hundreds of students participated.

 

The students of Canara College organized a rally from their college to the DC’s office and submitted a memorandum to DC N. S. Channappa Gowda, in which they demanded that the Jan Lokpal Bill should be passed as proposed by Team Anna. They also demanded the immediate release of Anna Hazare.
