Udupi: Koppal labourer killed in well collapse; another feared trapped under debris

Udupi, May 23, 2026: A 25-year-old labourer from Koppal died after a portion of earth collapsed during well-digging work at Garadimajalu in Kodavoor on Thursday. Another worker is suspected to be trapped under the debris.

The deceased has been identified as Ramesh (25). According to reports, he had come from Karkala along with five other co-workers for excavation work under a contract undertaken by Prabhat Shetty of Karkala.

The incident occurred when the ground suddenly caved in during the excavation work.

Soon after receiving information about the mishap, personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services and the police rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. Rescue teams managed to retrieve the body of one worker from beneath the collapsed earth.

Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna also visited the site. Rescue operations are still underway, and efforts are being made to trace and rescue the second worker, who is suspected to be trapped under the debris.
