Thieves strike eight shops in Kundapur; valuables worth lakhs stolen

Kundapur, Aug 21, 2013: In a serial theft case reported  from the Popular Building  on the TMC road near the old bus stand in the heart of the town, thieves have decamped with  valuables worth lakhs of rupees including gold and silver ornaments. The theft reportedly occurred during the wee hours of August 20, Thursday. The burglaries took in place in five shops of jewellery manufacturers on the second and third floors of the building, a herbal medicine sales outlet and the  office of a  local daily.

 

 

Sources revealed that the thieves gained entry into the complex by breaking open the locks of the main entrance and then burgled the Vishwashree Gems and Jewellers, Guruprasad Jewellers,  and Chalukya Newspaper office among other shops.

The  faces of two thieves were clear in the CC Camera footage of Vishwashree Gems and Jewellers and the timing shows that the theft took place at around 4.15 am. One of the thieves was a youth while another  aged around 45 -50. The CC Camera footage may prove vital in trapping the thieves.

Interestingly, the theft took place in an area where there were a number of houses. There is a suspicion that some locals were involved while another argument is that it was the handiwork of  inter-state thieves. A dog squad and forensic experts have been pressed into service. Investigations are underway under the leadership of Kundapur DySP Yashoda. Separate complaints have been lodged.

The police feel the jewellery manufacturing shops might have been the main target and that the thieves entered a newspaper office and medical shop unable to read their name boards.
