Swimmer Kharvi swims 9kms handcuffed to set world record

Udupi, Jan 9, 2012 : Gopal Kharvi, the ace swimmer, swam in handcuffs from St. Mary’s Island to Malpe Beach on Jan 8 Sunday in order to get a world record.

Kharvi of Kundapur covered 9kms with his legs tied in a metal chain. Siddaraju of Bangalore, a representative of the Guinness Book of World Records, and Girish, the circle inspector of Udupi, handcuffed the swimmer at St. Mary’s Island at 7:40 a.m. He reached Malpe Beach at 10:25 a.m., having covered the entire distance in 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Siddaraju told reporters that he will send a report of the achievement to Guinness world Records, which will announce its decision in 3 months.

DySP Jayanth Shetty; Jayaprakash Hegde, the state former minister; Sujatha, the wife of Gopal Kharvi; Pramod Madhwaraj, the entrepreneur; Gulabi, the president of Kodikanyana GP; Yashpal Suvarna; Sadanand Shenoy, the president of Gangolli Guru Jyothi Club; Manunath of Bangalore; and many others were also present.

Gopal Kharvi received cash rewards of Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 5000 from Guru Jyothi Club and Yashpal Suvarna, respectively.
