Mangaluru, May 11, 2025: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar reaffirmed the State government’s commitment to restoring peace in Dakshina Kannada and other coastal areas while leading the region on the path of development. He was addressing the gathering at the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Navodaya Grama Vikasa Charitable Trust in Mangaluru on Saturday.
Highlighting the cultural and spiritual significance of the region, Mr. Shivakumar described Dakshina Kannada as a beacon of peace and brotherhood. "This region upholds ‘dharma’ and is known for its heritage of harmony. The government is dedicated to preserving this legacy. Let us work together to ensure peace and progress in the coastal region,” he said. He added that the government’s five guarantee schemes are empowering women across the State.
Peace as a Precursor to Development
Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader emphasized that development is only possible in an environment free from hatred and malice. Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge, Dinesh Gundu Rao, echoed the sentiment, stating that Dakshina Kannada should set an example of progress through peaceful coexistence.
Empowering Women Through Self-Help Groups
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot praised the Trust for its work in empowering women through self-help groups. He highlighted the cooperative sector’s role in economic growth, particularly in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, and urged cooperative societies to bolster the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative.
The event also featured speeches by Cooperation Minister K.N. Rajanna, Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar, Dharmasthala Pattadhikari D. Veerendra Heggade, and Pejawar Mutt seer Vishwaprasanna Tirtha Swami.
Support for Soldiers
Trust founder M.N. Rajendra Kumar announced a donation of ₹3 crore from the Trust’s revenue for the welfare of soldiers currently serving on the Pakistan border.
The Navodaya Grama Vikasa Charitable Trust, associated with self-help groups across nine districts, has been instrumental in driving community development and fostering economic empowerment over the past 25 years.
