Mangalore, Dec 7, 2011: Delivering the inaugural address at a one-day event organized by the chemistry department of St. Agnes College for high school students in its conference hall as part of the International Year of Chemistry on Dec 7 Wednesday, Dr. B. S. Sherigar, the former vice chancellor of Kuvempu University in Shimoga, said that the study of chemistry can lead to astounding discoveries. 


Speaking further on the subject, he gave the example of Marie Curie, who became the first woman professor of chemistry and the first noble laureate. He noted that her husband was also a noble laureate.

Lauding St. Agnes College for organizing this event, he said that events such as these will have a huge impact on school children and will inspire them to make new discoveries.

Dr. Marie Prem D’Souza, the principal of St. Agnes College, presided over the event. She advised students to develop an interest in chemistry and choose chemistry-related careers. 


Prof. Dinesh Chowta, the nodal officer of SDM College in Ujire, was also present. 


Prof. Ronald Mascarenhas, the coordinator of the department of chemistry, delivered the welcome address. Dr. H. Jayanth delivered the introductory address. Dr. Ita M. D’Souza was the MC of the event and Helen Serrao delivered the vote of thanks. 


A UGC-sponsored exhibition titled Chem Fiesta will be held as part of the event for 2 days in the college auditorium.
