Udupi: 15-year-old student drowns in temple pond

Udupi, Aug 25, 2026: A 15-year-old student drowned in the pond of Sri Lakshmi Venkataramana Temple at Tenkapete in Udupi on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Aditya Nayak, 15, son of Krishna Nayak of Bellampalli Kukkikatte.

Aditya had visited the temple with a relative as a bhajana programme was being held there. As devotees were entering the temple pond to bathe and swim as part of the programme, Aditya also entered the water. However, the relative accompanying him did not enter the pond as he could not swim.

While swimming in the middle of the pond, Aditya suddenly drowned and went missing.

Temple authorities immediately alerted diver Eshwar Malpe, who reached the spot and began a search operation. After nearly an hour of efforts, Aditya was pulled out of the pond and rushed to a private hospital in Udupi in a critical condition. However, doctors declared him dead after examination.

Udupi Town Police visited the spot and are conducting an inquiry.
