Shivaratri at Dharmasthala: Veerendra Heggade calls for value-based living

Dharmasthala, Feb 15, 2026: Emphasising the spiritual significance of Shivaratri, Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D. Veerendra Heggade on Saturday urged devotees undertaking foot pilgrimages to Dharmasthala to give up personal flaws and lead a meaningful life rooted in good conduct and values.

He was speaking after felicitating foot pilgrims who arrived at Dharmasthala under the leadership of Guru Hanumanthappa Swamiji from Bengaluru, at the Pravachana Mantapa as part of Shivaratri celebrations.

Mr. Heggade said Lord Manjunathaswamy, revered as Vishakantha, possesses the divine power to absorb all imperfections and work for the welfare of the world. This belief, he said, draws devotees to Dharmasthala to pray for the salvation of those who have died in accidents or unnatural circumstances. He noted that undertaking the pilgrimage with selflessness, faith and devotion yields greater spiritual merit, and lauded the increasing participation of women in the foot pilgrimage.

Highlighting the spirit of service associated with Shivaratri, he said villagers and members of the public along the pilgrimage routes supported devotees by providing tender coconut water, free beverages, fruits, accommodation and meals, inspired by the belief that service to devotees is service to God. He also praised Bengaluru devotees for organising anna dasoha (free mass feeding) on Shivaratri at the grounds behind Annapoorna and at the high school playground.

On behalf of the pilgrims, Mr. Heggade’s close aide and secretary A. V. Shetty was honoured. Dharmasthala authorities felicitated pilgrimage coordinators Guru Hanumanthappa Swamiji and Mariyappa.
