Mangalore, July 7, 2012 : The state education department and the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan initiated an educational program called “Shaalegaagi Naavu Neevu” on July 5, Thursday.


Accordingly, officers, teachers, people’s representatives, PTA members, and volunteers from educational organizations will visit schools, interact with students, and identify ways to improve facilities in schools and reduce the number of students dropping out of schools. The major purpose of the program is to rejuvenate government schools that are on the verge of being shut down.
The program was launched in Mangalore at a special stage ceremony held in Government Higher Primary School, High School, and College in Balmatta. The chief guest was MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Thejomaya, member of the School Development Board, presided. Moses Jayashekar, Tara, Ranganath Kini, and Vinoda were also present. A number of students, teachers, and non-teaching staff members were also present.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel congratulated teachers for providing high quality education to students. Citing examples of D. V. Sadananda Gowda, Abdul Kalaam, Deve Gowda, and Indra Nooyi, he said that all these achievers started at government schools. While government schools produce successful people, private institutions fleece the public, he stated.
Recalling his student days, he said that he had to walk 3kms to the nearest school. Stating that there is an increase in stress and suicide among students studying in private schools, he said that government schools make people tougher and more self-confident.
Later, the dignitaries distributed uniforms among the students.
In Udupi, the program was inaugurated by Katpady Shankar Poojary, ZP president, in the ZP Higher Primary School in Padubidri on July 5, Thursday.
In his address, Mr. Poojary said that Rs. 22 crore has been earmarked to develop the quality of education in Udupi. This year, the government has released Rs. 12 lakh just for the construction of compound walls around schools, he added.
The chief guest of the occasion was A. S. Prabhakar Sharma, CEO of the ZP. Speaking on the occasion, he urged teachers and education officers to do their duty well and reduce school dropout rates.
Prominent people such as Geethanjali Suvarna, ZP member; Bhaskar Padubidri, TP member; Sevanthi Sadashiv, GP vice president; and many others were present.
