Senior Congress leader, Rajya Sabha Member Oscar Fernandes no more

Mangaluru, Sep 13, 2021: Veteran Congress leader, Rajya Sabha Member and former union minister Oscar Fernandes passed away at the Yenepoya Hospital in Mangaluru on September 13, Monday afternoon. He is survived by his wife Blossom Fernandes, a son and a daughter apart from a large number of admirers.

 

 

It may be recalled here that Oscar was undergoing treatment in the hospital since last month after he fell down while doing Yoga at home.

In his political career spanning five decades, Oscar was elected from Udupi Lok Sabha constituency for  five successive terms. He has been  a Rajya Sabha Member for four terms since 1998.Oscar had begun his  political career in 1972 by  getting elected to the Udupi Municipality. Later in 1980 he contested the Lok Sabha elections and defeated T A Pai who was considered his mentor. He had served as a Union Minister for Labour and Employment from 2006 to 2009 and had held different portfolios even during UPA-II regime under the leadership of Manmohan Singh.
