Saritha Suicide: ABVP demands stiff action against eve-teaser

Mangalore, Jun 20: A condolence meeting was held at University College in Hampankatta in honor of Final B.Com student Saritha who immolated herself on June 19 Sunday.

 

The Akhila Bharathiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organized a procession from University College campus to DC’s office, where they submitted an appeal to the DC. The ABVP has requested the DC to convene a meeting of bus conductors and drivers to check their bio-data and conduct meetings at a regular basis.

                      

 

Principal Narayana Bhatta H. R. said that the college has a counseling system, in which teachers conduct counseling for students facing problems. Regretting that Sarita had not complained to her lecturers regarding any alleged sexual harassment meted out to her by a bus conductor, he said that young people should not get overwhelmed with such problems, but should face them with courage.

Ashwini, a classmate of the deceased, said that Sarita was a quiet girl and that she often accompanied her because she was afraid of a certain bus conductor who always teased her. She said that Sarita had told her that the bus conductor had a dark complexion. Romi, another friend of Saritha, said that Sarita was scared of the bus conductor, who had the support of four of his associates, even when her friends accompanied her. She added that she last saw Sarita on Saturday.

The Kadri Police have registered a case. The results of the post mortem conducted on Sarita’s body will be ready in 10 days.
