Row over issue of changing road width rocks MCC meeting

Row over issue of changing road width rocks MCC meeting

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Jan 28, 2012 : The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) opposition has opposed the Mangalore Urban Development Authority’s (MUDA) decision to change the width of a road proposed under Master Plan II from 100ft to 20ft at Padavu because an educational institution had requested it. The MUDA, having approved the request at its meeting, has also sent it to the state government for its approval.

Criticizing this move on the part of the MUDA, Corporator Deepak Poojary and other opposition members said that if such a provision exists, all roads proposed under Master Plan II should be retained as they are.

According to the request made by this college, the eastern part of the proposed road has been concretized and converted into a 24m road connecting Bondel – Kavoor Junction to KPT. Its western side, which was proposed to be widened, is 10m wide and connects Padavinangadi to Mary Hill.

Arguing about it, Corporator Shashidhar Hegde said that if the government approves this request, then it should change Master Plan II to allow poor people construct independent houses on their 5-cent plots. Corporator Ashraf warned that he will organize protests on every street if this proposal is approved.

Several issues such as health, water supply, price hikes, and others were discussed at the meeting.

Mariamma Thomas suggested that the mayor must issue white paper on the MCC’s financial condition as the roads are in a pathetic condition and need urgent repair.

The MCC also decided to rename the circle near Circuit House as Parashurama Circle and to waive off the MCF water bill, which shot up to Rs. 23 lakh plus Rs. 76.5 lakh interest.

Dr. Harish, the MCC commissioner, and Geetha Nayak, the deputy mayor, were also present.
